CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES:

• Jackson State remains the only team in the Southwestern Conference that has yet to win a true home contest this season, as all of their wins have come away from friendly confines. On this weekend’s SWAC DIgital Network broadcast, the Tigers trek away from home to face Alabama State who, despite a commanding lead in divisional standings, are one of three teams in the conference with a better road record (6-6) than home record (8-10). The other teams in the conference with said distinction are Mississippi Valley State and Grambling State.

• Kiara Suttles of Southern hit two more home runs this past weekend to take the conference’s outright lead in the category (10). Nearly half of the sophomore’s hits (22) have cleared the fence, and she ranks No. 2 nationally in home runs per game (0.53).

• After suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of Western Division leader Texas Southern, the Southern Jaguars have already lost more games this season (15) than they did all of last season (14).

• When Alcorn State takes on Mississippi Valley State this weekend, it will pit the SWAC’s leader in batters struck out – Alcorn State – versus the league leader in team strikeouts in the Devilettes.

• Texas Southern, Jackson State and Grambling State are the only three teams in the conference that have hit more triples than home runs. Texas Southern -- who ranks No. 2 in the nation in triples per game (.45) -- has hit 13 triples to 10 homers. Jackson State has seven triples to six homers, and Grambling State – which has hit five triples – is the only SWAC team that has yet to hit a home run this season.

• Prairie View A&M continues to rank among the most adept base-thieving teams in the nation, as the Lady Panthers have swiped 39 of a possible 42 bags this season. Shelby Williams has been a big part of that, ranking in the top 20 nationally in terms of stolen bases per game (No. 12; 0.71 per game). Of athletes with this ranking distinction, Williams is one of four players who has been caught stealing no more than once this season.
