BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the eve of the SWAC Tournament, three members of the TSU baseball team earned All-SWAC honors in Jeremy Almaguer, Tyrese Clayborne and Jeremy Gaines.
Earning first team honors were Almaguer at third base and Clayborne in the outfield. A graduate student from San Antonio, Almaguer made an immediate impact on both sides of the diamond as he ranks as one of the top offensive players in the SWAC. Almaguer is batting .328 and has scored 51 runs with 59 hits, 14 doubles, two triples, 52 RBI and 77 total bases.
Clayborne has been one of the most versatile players on the team with the ability to play multiple positions. The Houston native is having a career senior season as the fifth-leading hitter (.390) in the SWAC while also ranking top 10 in hits (67), triples (6), slugging percentage (.616), stolen bases (34) and OPS (1.083).
Gaines earned second team honors as a designated hitter after joining the team this past fall as a graduate student. The Chicago, Ill. native has emerged as one of the top hitters in the nation as he’s batting .402 and ranks top 10 nationally while also ranking top 10 in the SWAC in hits (68), doubles (15), on-base percentage (.502) and slugging percentage (.615).
TSU opens SWAC Tournament play this evening against Alabama State at 6 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
