JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State scored 21 points in the fourth to break open a tight game as Texas Southern fell 41-21 Saturday afternoon inside Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Jackson State scored on its opening drive as Peytton Pickett rushed 54 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after the PAT. The teams would continue to trade punts as the quarter went on along with a missed field goal by Jackson State. The TSU offense would get going from that point as Andrew Body rushed for 14 yards followed by a 49-yard run from LaDarius Owens to set up a 1-yard touchdown run from Jacorey Howard. Richard Garcia III’s PAT was good as TSU tied it at 7-all.
TSU continued to have success on the ground to open the second quarter as Owens had three big runs, the longest a 23-yarder, to set up a 5-yard touchdown from Dominic Franklin as TSU moved ahead 14-7 after the PAT. JSU would miss a field goal on the ensuing attempt but TSU’s next opportunity came to a sudden halt as TSU fumbled at its own 21. The TSU defense made a big stand and forced a JSU turnover at its own 3 but couldn’t capitalize offensively as they were forced to punt. JSU’s Shedeur Sanders converted a pair of third down conversions on the next drive which set up a JSU touchdown and a 14-all tie.
TSU punted on its next drive and JSU answered with a five-play, 53-yard drive which resulted in a touchdown and 21-14 JSU lead with 2:11 remaining. TSU was on the verge of answering JSU’s score late in the half but mishandled the field goal attempt as JSU led 21-14 at the half.
Both teams traded punts to open the second half but TSU would strike first as they used a mix of the run and pass en route to an 87-yard drive which was capped off by Jacorey Howard’s 2-yard run. The PAT was good as the score was tied at 21-all.
JSU opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown but missed the PAT as they led 27-21. TSU punted on its next drive but the defense came up big again as Tarik Cooper forced a fumble which was recovered by Isaiah Hamilton at the TSU 47. Unfortunately, TSU fumbled two plays later after a sack and JSU responded with a touchdown drive to move ahead 34-21 before tacking on another to close out the scoring.
TSU finished with 338 yards of offense as Owens rushed for a career-best 198 yards on 23 carries. Ke’Lenn Davis led all receivers with four receptions for 38 yards while Cooper had eight tackles followed by seven tackles, a tackle for loss, fumble recovery and breakup from Josh Murray.
