CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas Southern volleyball closed out tourney play at the Islander Classic with a 3-0 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
TSU and the Islanders were neck-to-neck to open set one but the Tigers surrendered a 7-0 run to trail 13-6. Two TSU kills cut the deficit to 13-8 but the Islanders scored five straight to lead 18-10. TSU fought back with a 6-0 run to trail 19-16 and was down three at 21-18 but the Islanders pulled away for a 25-19 win.
Set two was all Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as they turned a 6-3 lead into a 14-5 lead as they never looked back en route to a 25-17 win. TSU regrouped in set three and was only down 13-12 but the Islanders went on a 5-0 run to create separation. TSU would get within 21-16 but the Islanders closed the match out with four-of-the-next points to seal the match.
Gracie Hill led TSU with 10 kills followed by five from Lauren Battle. Kennedi Walker had 22 assists while Angelika Rusin added nine digs.
Hill and Battle were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.
TSU is back in action next Friday in Las Cruces, N.M. against the University of Arizona at 5 p.m.
