HOUSTON — Texas Southern women's soccer battled to a thrilling 3–3 draw against UTRGV on Sunday afternoon at Durley Field, showcasing grit and offensive firepower in a match that saw three second-half goals from the Lady Tigers.
Freshman forward Kaia Butler wasted no time putting TSU on the board, scoring just 66 seconds into the match off a feed from Liz Alberto. UTRGV answered minutes later, and the teams entered halftime knotted at 1–1.
In the second half, Emeyda Cruz delivered a standout performance, scoring twice to keep the Lady Tigers in the match. Her first goal came in the 68th minute off an assist from Clara Dotigny, and she later converted a penalty kick in the 86th minute to seal the draw.
"Coach was telling me that there's more to me and I can bring more to the table," Cruz said. "It was a confidence thing, and today I guess I was just like, 'I'm back,' and it feels nice to be back."
Goalkeeper Alessandra Bastidas anchored the defense with six saves, including several clutch stops in the second half to keep TSU within striking distance.
"Overall, we battled," said Head Coach Adams. "There were times when we could've given up, but to get that last goal in the final five minutes — we've had to chase games before. With this group, they're starting to understand, trust, and believe in one another. For us as a group, we're going to keep building."
Texas Southern returns to Durley Field on Sunday September 21, to face The University of St. Thomas in a special Senior Night celebration.
