Houston, Texas- Damian Garcia hit two home runs and drove in four as Texas Southern defeated Panthers 13-9 on Thursday. Garcia homered in the fifth and eighth innings.
Both offenses were strong at the plate as Texas Southern collected eight hits and Panthers nine in the high-scoring affair.
Panthers got on the board in the first inning after Mac Bowie doubled, scoring one run.
Texas Southern jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Garcia singled down the left field line, and Jonathan Trejo hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.
Texas Southern added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Panthers committed an error, and Kelton Phillips hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run
Panthers tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a single by Landon Williams, and a home run to left field by Bowie.
Texas Southern flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs on four hits to take the lead, 11-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a grand slam to left field by Bryce Hughes that drove in four.
Texas Southern scored one run in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run to left field by Garcia.
Jose Luccioni earned the win for Texas Southern. The pitcher surrendered one hit and one run (zero earned) over two and one-third innings, striking out one and walking none. Landyn Grant took the loss for Panthers. The left-handed pitcher went four and one-third innings, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking five. Calvin McClendon opened the game for Texas Southern. The pitcher gave up five hits and four runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking three. David Medina collected the save. Jace Maynard and Aaron Moore each appeared in relief for Texas Southern.
Hughes and Garcia each drove in four runs for Texas Southern. Texas Southern had patience at the plate, collecting seven walks for the game. Jaden Jones and Evan Joubert led the team with two bases on balls each.
Panthers amassed nine hits in the game. Bowie drove the middle of the lineup, leading Panthers with four runs batted in. The left-handed hitter went 3-for-5 on the day. Williams collected two hits for Panthers in four at bats. Panthers had a strong eye at the plate, collecting eight walks for the game. Trenton Bush, Brayden Johnson, and Michael Smith Jr led the team with two walks each.
