HOUSTON – The Texas Southern Lady Tigers volleyball team closes out its regular season this week with a pair of home matches on Monday and Tuesday.
TSU hosts Grambling State on Monday before taking on Arkansas–Pine Bluff the following day. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Tigers (18-10) will go into the Southwestern Athletic Conference's postseason tournament this weekend as the No. 2-seeded team. The Lady Tigers are 14-2 in league matches. The tournament begins Friday in Jackson, Miss.
TSU enters its final two contests of the regular season riding a two-match winning streak, having swept Southern and Alcorn State on the road this past weekend.
The team opened its weekend with a three-set win at Southern. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-18, and 25-20.
In Friday's win over the Jaguars, freshman Alexis Austin tied a career-high with 12 kills, hitting .320 for the match to lead the Lady Tigers to victory. She also tallied six digs during the match.
Audriana Carson knocked down 11 kills in the win over Southern, while Nicole Robinson and Nia Stone tallied seven kills apiece. Setters Asia Howard and Ellena Torres each handed out 17 assists, with Howard also digging nine opposition attacks.
Senior libero Allison Woods led the defensive effort for the Lady Tigers, recording 11 digs. Cassidy Jannson chipped in 10 digs for TSU.
The Lady Tigers hit better than .200 in each of three sets, while holding Southern to under that mark each time.
TSU pulled away from Southern in a close set one with five unanswered points to claim a 22-17 lead. Robinson knocked down two kills during that run, while Stone had a kill and an assist.
The visitors began to pull away earlier in the second set, but didn't shake the Jaguars until the midway point, taking advantage of four Southern errors during a 6-0 run to take a 19-11 lead. Kills from Austin accounted for the other two points.
In set three, the Jaguars kept pace with their guests until the very end as the Lady Tigers scored the last five points of the set to take the match.
Southern (11-12) fell to 10-5 with the loss.
When they crossed the state line into Mississippi for Saturday's match, the Lady Tigers continued their winning ways with a quick sweep of 2-22 Alcorn State. TSU won by scores of 25-11, 25-13, and 25-15.
Carson led TSU with seven digs in the win over the Lady Braves, followed by Robinson, who added six kills. Howard handed out a team-high 14 assists, while Jannson and Carson each dug nine opposition attacks.
