Consistently known for its athletic feats on the court, the Texas Southern men's basketball team continues to have the same success in the classroom as the team posted the highest APR among HBCU men's basketball programs.
"Congratulations to head men's basketball coach Johnny Jones on his team's academic achievements," said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. "Our goal at TSU is to develop student-athletes to have success in the classroom and on their respective playing fields as Coach Jones and his staff has continually exceeded that goal. I would also like to recognize the Board of Regents, President's office, faculty and staff, compliance department and academic staff for their hard work as this is a team honor that requires a lot of dedication and time commitment to ensure our student-athletes are put in the proper position to succeed.

For the 2023-24 academic year, TSU posted a multi-year rate of 977, which is the second-highest score in program history. The rate is also 15 points higher than the national men's basketball average of 962 as seventh-year head coach Johnny Jones has posted the top five highest APR multi-year rates in TSU history. On Friday, the program will have six student-athletes participate in commencement exercises at TSU.

"I'm blessed to have a tremendous academic department who cares deeply for our student-athletes," said Jones. "This could not happen without the proper guidance and leadership from our athletic department."
