HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The TSU volleyball team dropped a pair of tough contests at the Bearkat Invitational on Saturday.
LAMAR 3, TSU 0
TSU and Lamar had a several intense battles as the Cardinals claimed a 3-0 win in the opener.
TSU claimed a 20-18 lead late in the first set but LU regained a 22-21 margin but TSU fought back and had a chance to close out the set with kill and block from Kourtni Collier. However, three straight errors led to extra play as LU won set one 26-24.
TSU stayed close in set two as they battled back from a 21-16 deficit and was within 23-22 but LU recorded two kills to claim set two 25-22. TSU was ahead 9-8 in set three but a 9-0 Cardinal run secured the match as they won 25-14.
Gracie Hill had 10 kills while Angelika Rusin had 16 digs while Lauren Battle and Ava Ray had 11 each. Ava Ray and Kenndi Walker recorded 10 assist each while Collier had nine assisted blocks.
SAM HOUSTON STATE 3, TSU 0
TSU closed out invitational play with a 3-0 loss to Sam Houston State.
TSU was behind 14-9 in set one but closed the gap to 19-16 before a 6-1 SHSU run gave them a 25-17 win. TSU struggled to begin set two and never recovered as the Bearkats won 25-11. SHSU went ahead 15-10 in set three but TSU battled back and closed the margin to 15-14 but SHSU outscored them 8-2 to lead 23-16. TSU fought back and was within 24-20 but the match ended with a service error.
Gracie Hill had 10 kills for TSU while Ava Ray had 12 assists followed by 11 from Kennedi Walker. Angelika Rusin had 18 digs en route to All-Tournament honors.
TSU is back action for SWAC play Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Prairie View A&M for a 6:30 p.m. start.
