Lorman, Mississippi—Texas Southern defeated Alcorn State Braves 5-1 on Wednesday.
Texas Southern got on the board in the top of the first inning after Bryce Hughes singled down the left field line, and Damian Garcia grounded out, each scoring one run. Texas Southern added to their early lead in the top of the second inning when Elijah Rodriguez scored after tagging up, and Garcia singled, scoring two runs.
Calvin McClendon earned the win for Texas Southern. The left-handed pitcher gave up two hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking five. Davis led things off on the bump for Alcorn State Braves. The starter allowed six hits and five runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking eight. Jose Luccioni tossed two innings of zero-run ball for Texas Southern in relief. The righty allowed one hit, striking out two and walking none.
Garcia provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Texas Southern with three runs batted in. The infielder went 1-for-4 on the day. Hughes went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Texas Southern in hits. Texas Southern had patience at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Hughes and Evan Joubert led the team with two bases on balls each. Hughes and Kelton Phillips each stole multiple bases for Texas Southern. Texas Southern stole seven bases in the game. Texas Southern turned one double play in the game.
Ford, Leonard, and Adams each collected one hit for Alcorn State Braves. Ford stole two bases. Alcorn State Braves were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Banks had the most chances in the field with seven.
A doubleheader will take place on Friday against Alcorn State at 12 and 2 p.m.
