BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern made a late push from an early first half deficit but came up short as Southern held on for a 66-57 win on Monday night.
TSU battled back from an early deficit as Zaire Hayes' and-one tied it up at 13-all but SU regained a 16-13 lead after an offensive rebound led to a three-pointer. Over the next 7:55, 12 players would score between both teams but the difference came down to turnovers as TSU committed six during that span as SU closed out the half on a 20-11 run for a 38-26 halftime lead.

SU opened the second half on a 7-0 run to claim a 45-26 lead. Similar to the SWAC opener between both teams in January, Texas Southern would dig deep once again to overcome the early hole it fell in.

The next eight-and-a-half minutes saw TSU undergo a 360-degree turn as they clawed and scraped their way back into the contest on both ends of the court. TSU would force 10 turnovers during that span and record seven steals as they outscored SU 23-7 to draw within 52-49 after a Duane Posey free throw.

Southern would outscore TSU 6-1 over the next two minutes to up its margin to eight (58-50) but TSU hung close as they would trail 61-55 with 2:23 left. However, TSU couldn't get over the hump as SU closed the game out from the free throw line.

Kolby Granger scored 16 points, had six steals, four assists and grabbed seven rebounds while Kavion McClain scored 12 with eight assists.

TSU is back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Mississippi Valley State.
