History

LORMAN, Miss. – TSU used a big first half run and rode the momentum into the second half as they managed a 75-59 road split win in a critical contest at Alcorn State on Monday night.

Entering Monday's game, the Tigers were under high alert in the SWAC standings as ASU was a half-game behind and looking to move up in the tourney standings as the loser would drop to seventh. A move to seventh would've meant playing a day earlier in the SWAC Tournament in addition to having to win four games instead of the normal three games. Even though there's still some uncertainty in the standings, Monday's win went a long way towards controlling TSU's destiny.

Both teams were even to start the game as both took 14 shots within the first eight minutes as TSU made five while ASU made four. The difference early on was the three-point line as TSU hit four while ASU missed all its attempts as TSU led 16-11.

The TSU defense forced two turnovers after the early lead and Jaylen Wysinger made a three-pointer for a 19-11 margin. Wysinger's three sparked a 22-11 TSU run as the Tigers were red hot from the field over the next 9:28 as they missed only two shots (9-of-11) while ASU struggled en route to a 38-24 halftime lead.

Like January's meeting between both teams, TSU took a sizable halftime lead but had to hold off a late ASU charge. TSU didn't allow that to happen this time as they matched the Braves in production over the first 12 minutes to lead by 20 with 6:59 left. TSU kept its foot on the gas as the contest ended en route to sweeping the Braves for the season as 11 players scored.

Zaire Hayes led TSU with 20 as he was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kolby Granger followed with 13 and eight rebounds while Grayson Carter had nine boards. Kehlin Farooq also grabbed eight rebounds with four assists.

The 2024-25 regular season ends Saturday at Prairie View A&M as the contest will tip off at 4:30 p.m.
