Texas Southern had a solid first set but fell short at the end as Bethune-Cookman claimed a tight 3-1 win Friday evening.
TSU stormed out to a 17-9 lead in set one and outside of a late 8-0 run by BCU, TSU held on for a 25-21 win. Set two saw BCU break open a 4-4 tie and turn it into a 17-9 lead before TSU cut it to 17-11. BCU scored five straight to lead 22-11 but TSU counted with four straight to trim the lead to 22-15 before the Wildcats scored three straight tom 25-15.
Set three was back-and-forth as TSU led 17-15 but the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to reclaim a 22-15 margin. TSU did its best to get back into the set as they outscored BCU 7-2 to draw within 24-22 but the Wildcats closed out the set with a kill up the middle for a 25-22 win.
TSU jumped ahead 16-11 midway through set four but BCU managed to tie it at 19-all. From there it was nip-and-tuck with four lead changes as BCU would claim a 25-24 lead. Gracie Hill sent the match into sudden death with a kill and TSU moved ahead 26-25 after a BCU attack error. However, BCU would score the next three pints to win the match 3-1.
Hill led TSU with 14 kills followed by eight from Lauren battle and Kourtni Collier. Ava Ray had 19 assists followed by 34 digs from Angelika Rusin.
