Box ScoreThe Texas Southern University volleyball team opened the Rice Invitational with a 3-1 loss against Texas State University inside Tudor Fieldhouse on Friday evening.
Set Scores: 15-25, 19-25, 25-18, 13-25
In the first set, Texas State jumped out to a 13-5 start, hindering the Tigers early on. An eight-point deficit would be the closest the Tigers would get as they fell, 25-15.
Both teams battled back and forth earlier on in the second set as TXST led, 11-10. Texas State pulled away with a 9-3 run, leading 20-13 after a kill by MJ McCurdy. The Tigers scored two more points before Texas State hit match point. TSU tried to battle back with four consecutive points before Texas State called the game.
Tied up at 15 in set three, the Tigers used a 7-2 run which consisted of four kills and a service ace to lead 22-17. Texas State would only get one more point before TSU went 3-0 to close out with the set win.
Texas Southern was out numbered in kills 15-7 in set four and Texas State capitalized on six Tiger errors to close out the match.
Gracie Hill and Lauren Battle led the way for the Tigers with nine kills while Ava Ray and Kennedi Walker had 17 and 13 assists each. Angelika Rusin paced TSU defensively with 19 digs.
Texas Southern will continue in the Rice Invitational on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Houston Christian inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
