For the second straight night, a fifth set was needed as TSU held on to defeat Alabama A&M 3-2 Monday inside the H&PE Arena.
A 6-3 run by AAMU in set one gave them a 16-13 lead which expanded to 20-16. With their backs against the wall, TSU fought back with a 7-1 surge which saw them move ahead 23-21. AAMU moved ahead 24-23 but Keldri Young's kill tied it at 24-all and moved the set into sudden death. An ace by Kourtni Collier moved TSU ahead followed by Taryn Stafford's kill for a 26-24 win.
TSU led 10-8 in set two until a 6-3 AAMU run moved the lead to AAMU 14-12. It was an even match from that point as TSU outscored AAMU 9-8 to knot it at 21-all. However, a TSU service error gave the lead back to AAMU as they closed out the set 4-1 to win 25-22.
Gracie Lee recorded four kills to start set three off as TSU jumped out to a 12-3 lead. The Tigers kept the pressure on as they cruised to a 25-13 win. In set four, AAMU took a 3-2 lead and led by as much as eight (18-10). The Tigers fought back and outscored AAMU 10-4 to draw within 22-20 but AAMU's Fatima Ramirez recorded a big kill followed by an TSU attack error and service ace by AAMU to claim a 25-20 win.
Set five was intense from the start as AAMU led 8-7 before the sides switched. The Bulldogs moved the score to 9-7 but a defensive substitution by head coach Alexis Austin changed the tide of the game from that point. TSU would pick up an offensive point to draw within 9-8 and freshman Morgynne McQueen came off the bench and logged three straight blocks to move the momentum meter back to TSU as they led 11-9. AAMU would narrow the gap to 11-10 but Keldri Young's two kills coupled with timely ball placement gave TSU its second straight fifth set win of the weekend as they won 15-12.
