History
Kelton Phillips hit for the cycle to carry Texas Southern to a 19-10 victory over Grambling State Tigers on Sunday. Phillips hit an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning, doubled in the second inning, tripled in the first inning, and doubled in the fourth inning.
Texas Southern collected 15 hits and Grambling State Tigers had 15 in the high-scoring affair.
Texas Southern got on the board in the top of the first inning after Bryce Hughes grounded out, and Damian Garcia homered to left field, each scoring one run. Texas Southern added two runs in the second after Phillips doubled to center field. A single by Jonathan Trejo gave Texas Southern the lead, 6-5, in the top of the third.
Texas Southern scored eight runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. Jaden Jones doubled, scoring one run, Evan Joubert drew a walk, scoring one run, a passed ball scored one run, Elijah Rodriguez singled, scoring two runs, Phillips singled, scoring one run, and Hughes doubled, scoring two runs. Texas Southern scored one run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to left field by Tyler Legendre.
Phillips hit an inside the park home run, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth for the Texas Southern.
Aaron Moore earned the win for Texas Southern. The reliever surrendered three hits and two runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking one. The reliever went one and two-thirds innings, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking four. James Malone stepped on the bump first for Texas Southern. The lefty gave up six hits and seven runs over three and one-third innings, striking out one and walking two. Issac Garcia tossed two innings of shutout ball for Texas Southern in relief. The reliever gave up one hit, striking out two and walking one.
Texas Southern tallied 15 hits in the game. Hughes and Rodriguez each collected multiple hits for Texas Southern. Trejo paced Texas Southern with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting eight walks for the game. Hughes and Phillips each stole multiple bases for Texas Southern. Texas Southern stole four bases in the game. Texas Southern turned one double play in the game. Texas Southern was sure handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Trejo had the most chances in the field with seven.
After a long road trip, TSU finally plays in Houston as they'll travel to Rice on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. followed by its SWAC home opener against Alabama A&M on Friday at 3 p.m inside MacGregor Park.
