RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A late comeback effort fell short as TSU fell 72-58 to California Baptist on Thursday afternoon.
A 5-5 tie in the first quarter turned into a 14-5 deficit after a 9-0 CBU run. TSU's Jaida Belton ended the run with a bucket and sparked a brief TSU run with four points of her own as TSU trailed 14-11. CBU would push its lead back to seven on two occasions to close out the quarter but three Tigers would score as they ended the half strong with a 7-2 surge to trail 24-22.
CBU would up its lead to six at the 7:25 mark but TSU kept it close again with four points from Belton as they trailed 33-31. However, the Tigers couldn't sustain the momentum entering the half as they were outscored 15-4 over the final 6:16 en route to trailing 48-35.
CBU would lead by double digits within the first six minutes but the Tigers would fight back as Maci Quiller's jumper cut the lead to 53-43. TSU would force four turnovers and turn aggressive on the offensive end as they closed out the third stanza on a 11-6 run to trail 59-54.
Aylasia Fantroy's two free throws drew TSU to within 61-56 at the 7:45 mark. Both teams would go cold from the field in the quarter with a combined three field goals between both teams. The difference would come from the free throw line as CBU went 9-for-12 to seal the win.
Fantroy led TSU with 11 points and six rebounds while Belton had nine rebounds and eight points. Courtlyn Loudermill grabbed eight rebounds with seven points.
TSU is back in action on Sunday, Dec.29 at 2 p.m. at Tarleton State.
