With no go-to scorer, TSU focuses on defense

When the Texas Southern men's basketball team needed a bucket last season, the ball was pounded inside to 6-10 senior center Aaric Murray, who lifted the Tigers to the SWAC tournament championship en route to being named conference player of the year.

Murray's short run at TSU was a productive one, resulting in an appearance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers return 6-5 forward Jose Rodriguez, a second-team preseason All-SWAC selection, but the Tigers are missing that one player they can rely on for a quick score.

"I'm not sure who is going to be the guy to step up," TSU coach Mike Davis said Wednesday during the SWAC basketball media day conference call. "We're looking for four, five guys every night that can give us 10 points. We don't have a go-to guy, per se."

This scares me.  Not having a scorer is like not knowing how to catch a baseball but yet you're an outfielder lol .... I don't understand.  You're expected to know how to attack the basket and position yourself to get points especially if you're passed the amateur level (anything pass JV).

I just don't know what to say.  Because Aaric was in his last year of eligibility, it's not like he abruptly left. Why the recruitment season wasn't focused around getting proven and well-trained scorers to replace him or developing returning talent to do so????

These kids have talent, but I guess nobody was the clear cut go-to guy (like Aaric was last year). I have no problem with team ball and if somebody rises as the hot shooter of the game and if it's not the same guy as last game, then so be it. I just want to see W's.

Yeah our young men are talented.  I'm just saying, he made it seem as if the offense will be completely dysfunctional .... that's how I took it anyway.  But he's right, every quality team has a go-to, I was thinking it will be Briggs but he's out til January. So right now in my head that leaves Jose, a returning starter who strength lies in aggressive attacks. He has taken over a few games last year and made some big time buckets .... his game is slightly reminiscent of Tony Parker from the Spurs to me.

Biggs will be here in January. Chris Thomas just got cleared. I think Mike Davis likes to throw these interviewers off the scent in a way and surprise these schools we'll be visiting soon. At least that's what I'm hoping.

You might be right, that would be a good coaching strategy.  We'll see .... man they have to have the toughest preseason schedule out there so they gotta come correct or else.

I am excited for this season!
Luckily many of the early games will be televised .... any word on if they'll be doing live streams for season home games?

I haven't heard anything, but I doubt it since they don't have anyone to do play-by-play at the games that I'm aware of. The football stream was an easy transition as they already had some of that staff lined up for KHOU-2

I don't think any Houston university stream any home basketball games live .... I know SMU does here in Dallas
